On the 12th of December 2018 Region 1 GHQ organised the 1st Annual Christmas Blood Drive.
The event was well supported with 20 people offering to donate blood.
After meeting up at the Garda Band Hall we travelled to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service at D`Olier House.
The IBTS needs to collect 3000 donations weekly to ensure a safe and sustainable blood supply to the country’s hospitals it serves 365 days a year.
Up to three people can benefit from a single pint of blood.
Information on Platelet donation was also made available to everybody.
Platelets are small cells present in the blood of all healthy people. They are essential to enable blood to clot properly.
They are used in the treatment of Leukemic and cancer patient, burns victims and newborn babies.
Platelets are a crucial lifesaving treatment for many patients fighting cancer.
There are currently just 2,200 platelet donors in Ireland and we urgently need more donors to join the platelet panel.
